Capital City Coins and Jewelry has been a fixture on Monona Drive for nearly 40 years, when it was opened by Jerry Hermanson, an avid coin-collector. Jerry collected his first coin when he was a young newspaper-delivery boy, a shiny fifty-cent piece that was much more exciting to him than paper money. It was offered by a customer who continued to pay in half-dollars throughout Jerry’s time on the route. Those half-dollars sparked Jerry’s lifelong passion for coin-collecting.
Jerry began attending coin shops, coin shows, and flea markets during the years that followed. As a young man, he even hosted a few coin shows of his own. When he got wind of a reputable collector selling a $15,000 coin collection, Jerry even took out a second mortgage on his home so he could make the purchase. It was a great gamble: That collection became the starting inventory of Capital City Coins and Jewelry, which opened its doors for business nearly 40 years ago.
Jerry still proudly owns and operates the business, along with his son, Mark, and his daughter-in-law, Kristi. The business has grown to include an impressive selection of not only coins and bullion but also watches and jewelry, including both new items and estate pieces.
